How to apply a decal
Tools Needed
Step 1- Clean the Surface
Wash the area thoroughly to remove dirt, dust, wax, and grease. Once dry, wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol and a clean microfiber cloth. Allow the surface to completely dry before applying the decal.
Tip: Avoid applying decals to freshly waxed surfaces, as wax can prevent the adhesive from bonding properly.
Step 2- Position Your Decal
Before removing the backing, hold the decal against the vehicle and determine exactly where you want it placed. Use small pieces of masking tape to mark the position and make sure everything is straight and centered.
Step 3- Measure & level decal
Before removing the backing, position the decal on the vehicle and use a measuring tape to determine the proper placement. Measure from the edges, body lines, or other reference points to make sure the decal is centered and evenly positioned.
Use a level to ensure the decal is straight, then secure the top edge with masking tape to hold it in place.
Here we used the measuring tape and magnets to secure the spot.
Step 4- Peel & cut backing
Carefully fold the decal back and slowly peel the backing paper away from the vinyl. Keep the decal attached to the transfer tape as you remove the backing.
If any part of the vinyl stays on the backing, stop and press the area firmly before continuing.
Step 5- Apply the decal
Using a decal application squeegee, press and apply the decal to the intended surface using a back-and-forth motion. Work slowly and apply firm, even pressure to help the vinyl adhere smoothly and prevent air bubbles or wrinkles.
Don't have a decal application squeegee? You can use a small, flat object with a hard edge, such as a credit card, wallet, or pack of Post-it Notes.
Step 6-Remove the Tape & Apply the Other Half
Carefully remove the masking tape holding the decal in place. Then peel the decal back and remove the remaining half of the backing paper, keeping the vinyl attached to the transfer tape.
Slowly fold the decal back onto the surface and use your squeegee to apply the remaining half, working in a back-and-forth motion with firm, even pressure.
Step 7- Final Check
Once the entire decal has been applied, gently press around the edges of the decal to ensure everything is firmly adhered.
If you notice a small air bubble, you can often push it toward the nearest edge with your squeegee.
